Prevention is the simplest way to ward off disease and maintain your health. At Freeman Medical Clinic in Austin, Texas, Georgeanne Freeman, DO, provides complete primary and preventive care for people of all ages.

What is primary and preventive care?

Primary means first and your primary care provider is the first person you see for any health concern. Primary care providers (Doctors, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) also provide preventive care which optimizes your health to prevent potential health problems AND can identify early signs of disease.

Do I need an annual visit?

Yes. Just as we aren’t experts in the law or real estate it’s not YOUR job to know what is recommended for your health. These recommendations change (colonoscopy, cholesterol, hormones, vision health and many more) and we keep up with these changes and let our patients know. Primary and preventive care are individually curated for YOU and depend on your age, medical history, gender, family history (genetics) and future health care goals. Freeman Medical Clinic is your comprehensive health hub providing:

Physical exam (a check under the hood)

A physical exam is a complete head-to-toe health assessment. This comprehensive evaluation gives us information about your health at the time AND serves as a benchmark for the future. We will refer back to previous assessments each year and together with you identify changes in health and intercept early signs of concern. An EKG (electrocardiogram) is included. We also offer executive physical exams for companies and their employees. You may have heard of genetic testing and, yes, we offer those, too! Learn which medications are good fits, which aren’t based on your genetics. We use www.genesight.com.

Vaccinations

Don’t worry about it! It’s our job to know what you need when and we LOVE preventing diseases. We will discuss with you the pros and cons of any vaccine from human papillomavirus (HPV), shingles, flu, measles, all the way through COVID vaccines. We carry tetanus and flu shots here in the clinic.

Well-woman and well-man exams

Let’s talk about sex, baby! Everybody will at some point do it and the Doctor’s office is the perfect place to get answers free of bias. Age brings about changes to your physical, reproductive, and sexual health. We’re here for wherever you are. We provide pelvic exams, breast exams, Pap smears, contraception counseling, for humans of all ages and all genders. We can help with pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, difficulty achieving orgasm, hot flashes, vaginal discharge, vaginal odor, low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, and prostate concerns.

Sick care

You can’t always plan when you’re going to be sick so if you have a sore throat, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, you name it - we are here to see you TODAY (ok, Monday through Friday 9 - 5). Let us take care of you by providing a prompt diagnosis and comprehensive care. We have an inhouse lab that detects strep, flu, hemoglobin A1c (for diabetes) and other point of care (immediate) results.

Chronic disease management

Chronic means persisting for a long time or constantly recurring. Unsure if your issue is chronic or just normal? Again, we recommend seeing a professional. No questions are bad. We want you to ask. We’re here to help. Some examples of common chronic diseases are: diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), arthritis, overweight, and fatigue. Modern medicine is bringing forth new treatments all the time.

What are the most common primary and preventive care treatments?

  • Weight management (semaglutide otherwise known as Wegovy and Ozempic is the most effective appetite suppressant I have ever encountered). BUT….as with any ‘action’ plan if you want to keep the weight off studies show very clearly that mindset plays the biggest role. In fact, you can lose the weight and keep it off without any medication. How? With a weight loss coach. There are many good ones included our team. You don’t need to count anything (not calories, not macros). What is helpful long term is to learn why you are emotionally eating and/or drinking. It’s not hard. It’s not complicated but like anything else you will get the best result from hiring an expert.
  • Diet changes (focus on what you want to eat NOT what you can’t)
  • Exercise (I recommend you do what you enjoy not what the latest fad is)
  • Supplements and vitamins (different recommendations for each person)
  • Medication
  • Stop Smoking (of course you know this - we can help you be successful)
  • Reduced alcohol consumption (easier than you think - we are experts)
  • IV therapy (for skin brightening, hangovers, immune system, overall health)
  • Blood sugar monitoring (let’s avoid or rid you of diabetes, the leading cause of blindness worldwide)
  • Mammograms - recommended for all women beginning at age 40. Most places offer 3D mammograms and this is the best for detecting breast cancer. In Texas any woman over 40 can schedule a mammogram without a Doctor’s referral. Every year!
  • Bone Density - also recommended for women over 40. May not need every year depending on you.
  • Cholesterol - it’s good and bad. Good because it builds our blood waterways (arteries and veins). It also is the precursor of hormones like testosterone, estrogen and progesterone. It can be bad if you have too much. It can clog the blood flow. Don’t worry - we know how to interpret the results. Wherever you have your cholesterol checked ask the provider to go over the results with YOU. It’s all fine and dandy that we know what they mean but you deserve to learn about your cholesterol! Lipid is another word for cholesterol so a lipid panel = cholesterol panel.
